Date Posted

The Department of Art at Vassar College invites applications for a part-time, one-year position in American Art, to begin Fall 2017.  Vassar College is an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer with a strong commitment to increasing the diversity of the campus community and the curriculum and promoting an environment of equality, inclusion and respect for difference. Candidates who can contribute to that goal are encouraged to identify their strengths and experiences in this area. Applicants who have demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion are particularly encouraged to apply.

The position involves teaching two intermediate courses on American art, one advanced seminar, and offering a series of 3-4 lectures in the team-taught survey--Introduction to the History of Art and Architecture. In addition there is one conference section in the Introduction to the History of Art and Architecture included in the position. This is a one-year, part time appointment.   Available resources include the teaching collections of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, as well as the many collections and archives in the Hudson Valley and New York City.

Ideally, candidates should have their Ph.D. in hand.  We look for expertise in American art, broadly defined, from the Colonial period-1955; an interest in Native American art would be welcome.  We seek scholars who can teach dynamically in an undergraduate liberal arts setting and who would welcome the opportunity to participate in the development of the curriculum of the Art Department.  There is also the opportunity to collaborate with programs in American Culture, the Latin American and Latino/a Studies, Urban Studies, Women’s Studies. Art history is taught in a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment where exchange among faculty from different disciplines is encouraged.

Candidates are asked to submit a letter of application, a CV, an unofficial graduate-school transcript, three letters of recommendation and a writing sample, and if possible, selected syllabi from courses taught.  To apply, please visit
