Description

We invite applications for a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in English from candidates with the Ph.D. in hand who specialize in Literature and Medicine. Vassar College is an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer with a strong commitment to increasing the diversity of the campus community and the curriculum, and promoting an environment of equality, inclusion, and respect for difference. Candidates who can contribute to this goal through their teaching, research, advising, and other activities are encouraged to identify their strengths and experiences in this area. Individuals from groups whose underrepresentation in the American professoriate has been severe and longstanding are particularly encouraged to apply.

We welcome applications from specialists with a strong grounding in any period of English literature from the medieval to the contemporary, and we are especially interested in applicants who work across traditional period and field boundaries and who can contribute to Vassar’s rich and varied multi-disciplinary programs. The successful candidate’s work may address such issues as narrative medicine, disability studies, memory, thinking, and learning, medical humanities, imaging, embodiment, gender identity, and eco-criticism. This is a full-time, two-year position beginning in the Fall of 2018 that carries with it a teaching load of three courses per year.  Applicants must have received the Ph.D. between January 1, 2016 and July 1, 2018.

In addition to a letter of application, candidates should submit a curriculum vitae, diversity statement highlighting contributions to and/or future plans for promoting diversity and inclusion through teaching, research and/or professional involvements, graduate school transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable for the initial application), at least three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample of no more than 20-25 pages.
